AUTHOR’S NOTES:  Thanks to taraleesg1, the most awesomest beta ever.  This story popped into my head when I was at a friend’s house the other day and the smell of AXE invaded my nostrils.

The television volume was turned down low and Vala lounged on the couch, barely awake. The clock read 4 a.m., which was way too early for any person to be awake in Vala’s opinion. The only reason she was up was because of Daniel. General Landry needed him at a meeting in Washington right away. Since Vala lived with Daniel now, it was fitting that she be awake to see him off to the airport. Her eyelids had other plans however. Half dreaming and half listening to the paid programming selling mops, Vala dozed. If she was asleep when Daniel was ready to go she was sure he wouldn’t think any less of her.

With a soft click the bathroom door opened. Vala’s eyelids parted lightly when the smell hit her nose. Daniel was too cheap to buy cologne that he would only wear on occasion, but she had convinced him to buy some of the good smelling shower gel a couple weeks ago. The aroma that lingered after his showers had become familiar to her nose, a smell that would always remind her of Daniel.

Daniel’s eyes looked over Vala’s body, limp with sleep. Ever the adorable one in her Victoria’s Secret oversized t-shirt, he couldn’t help but smile. Walking over to the couch, he set his suit carrier on the back of it before leaning down to wake Vala up. If he didn’t pull her from sleep for a proper goodbye he’d never be forgiven.

“Vala, baby, wakeup,” Daniel whispered softly in her ear. By her immediate smile he knew she hadn’t really been sleeping. Vala’s arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him into a passionate kiss that had him seriously considering missing his flight. Vala was the one to pull away first, leaving his hair mussed and his eyes still closed.

“Have a good trip. Get back soon,” Vala told him with a wink. Sitting up, she watched him pick up his bag and the briefcase which he had set by the door earlier. After opening the door he looked back one last time. “I love you, Vala,” Daniel told her with a bright smile.

“I love you, my Daniel,” Vala replied, already missing him though he was still at the door. The door closed and he was off to the airport in a cab. Vala got up and back into their bed. Daniel’s smell had lingered and Vala inhaled deeply, closing her eyes. This is going to be a long three days. Vala thought before falling back to sleep, this time with an empty space on the other side of the bed.
