Vala let her pillow absorb the drops of saltwater streaming down her face. Tears were the little painful reminders that this was all real. She wasn’t in a nightmare that she could wake up from. Often Vala found herself crying quietly at night, wishing to get off the stupid ship she was stuck on. This was one of the few situations she couldn’t get herself out of. It was that feeling of helplessness that caused her such sadness.
The sparkling drops pushing themselves out of her eyes were like fragments of hope slowly leaking out of her. With every tear she shed, Vala lost a little piece of optimism. After fifty years of crying, she had poured all of her hope onto the cold floor of the Odyssey. Daniel was her comfort and without him, she knew she would have been lost a long time ago. The sparkling, cheeky woman who roller-skated through the empty halls of the ship was long gone. That woman had been replaced with an old gray-haired lady trapped in a sea of despair filled by her own tears. Daniel was Vala’s buoy, keeping her from sinking into a dark abyss of fear.
