“Do you ever get the feeling you’re forgetting something?”
Daniel looked up from his book and met Vala’s steady gaze.
“Everyday,” he replied.
“Really?” She scooted closer, her knee bumping against his.
Daniel found himself on the verge of smiling. He set his copy of “baking for
dummies” down on his table. “Why do you ask?”
She sighed. “Ever since we got stuck in that time bubble. I just feel ... never
mind,” her voice seemed sad.
“Vala, whatever happened, it doesn’t matter. Time reversed, now we have to live
our lives. You can’t spend all your time worrying about what might have been.
Life’s too short for that.”
Her eyes clouded over for a second. “See there. That is so familiar.”
“That’s because you told me the same thing in the gate room not long ago.”
“Oh. That’s right. But still.”
“Come on. Let’s see if we can figure this out.” He stood and offered her his
hand.
She seemed momentarily surprised, but she smiled, grabbed his hand, and allowed
him to help her up. Daniel was even a little surprised at himself. Not only had
he invited her over to bake cookies, he’d told her she could sleep over.
Why had he invited her over? Probably because she’d been alone for the weekend.
Sam had been going to have her over for a girls night in, but something had
come up. He was beginning to think he had lost what little remained of his
sanity. What impressed him the most was she hadn’t flung herself all over him,
hell she hadn’t even worn anything really provocative. Jeans and a blue
t-shirt. She still looked sexy as hell. Her long black hair wasn’t in its usual
ponytail. It hung loosely around her shoulders. He liked her hair down. Not
that he’d ever told her that.
Baking cookies had seemed harmless enough. If they could get through the night
without burning down his place, he’d count tonight as a win.
Daniel was too busy laughing within five minutes to even worry about fires. He
found himself wiping flour off his nose.
“I’m sorry,” she said in between giggles.
“No you’re not,” he grinned.
“Okay. I’m not. Flour looks good on you anyway.”
“Thanks. Here let me take over for a minute.”
She handed him the bowl and gave him an odd look.
“What?”
“Nothing.” Then she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you for
inviting me over. I know I can be a little hard to deal with at times.”
“Umm,” he felt his cheeks get hot. “You’re welcome. And you’re not that hard to
deal with.”
She stared at him a few more seconds. Then she walked away and began rummaging
through his cabinets.
He just smiled and went back to mixing. He’d probably never figure her out.
“Daniel, you naughty boy.”
“Hmm.”
She held up a bottle of tequila that was probably from one of Jacks visits.
“Good taste.”
“Not mine.”
“Girlfriend leave it here?” He heard the question in her voice.
“I don’t have a girlfriend Vala.” He was surprised to hear no trace of
annoyance in his tone. Things had changed between them. He trusted her. He
cared about her. Other than that, he wasn’t sure. If you’d asked him a few
months ago, Daniel would have said there was no way he could ever be more than
her friend. Now he wasn’t so sure. Ever since they’d lost fifty years of
memories something had really been nagging at him. He couldn’t remember any of
it. But he sometimes felt like a part of him did. He’d always thought she’d
just been playing with him, that it was all a game. That she didn’t really want
him.
Then she looked at him like she was now. And he thought he might be wrong.
“Just checking.” She gave him a soft smile.
“Of course. Can you turn the oven to 350 degrees?”
“Sure.“ She set the bottle down on his counter and turned the dial.
He began spooning the batter out and drooping it onto the baking sheet.
“Can I help?”
He nodded and let her take the spoon. Daniel watched as she attempted to
arrange the batter. Some were too big, some too small. He didn’t care. This was
nice. It was the most relaxing and fun evening he’d had in a long time.
“We should do this more often,” he blurted.
Her eyes seemed a little bright when she met his. “I’d like that.”
Daniel felt his face start burning again. “Let’s get those into the oven.”
Daniel took the tray and slid it inside. He set the timer and wiped off his
hands.
Vala grabbed two glasses and the bottle of tequila and gave him a wicked grin.
“Behave.” He snorted.
“Nope.” Then she darted into his living room and plopped down on his couch.
“Days off are not for behaving. And neither of us have to work tomorrow.”
“Why did I have feeling you were going to say something like that?”
“Because it’s true.” She poured them both a shot and winked.
Forty-five minutes, six cookies, and five shots of tequila later Daniel was
feeling good. Tired, but good. From the look on Vala’s face, the feeling was
mutual.
They were sprawled out on his floor. “When Harry met Sally” was playing on the
TV but neither of them were really paying any attention. They were just
talking. Then there was laughing. Then finally tickling. That’s when things got
interesting.
She went for his stomach. He rolled, grabbed her arms and pulled her on top of
him. Her face was inches from his. Her breath was warm and sweet. And he was a
little drunk. Not a good combination.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“Yeah.”
“Kiss me. I want you to kiss me.”
“You’re drunk Vala. And so am I, we probably shouldn’t-”
“Daniel, do you want to kiss me?” Her eyes seemed focused and clear.
He swallowed. His voice wasn’t slurred when he spoke. “Yes. And it scares the
hell out of me.” Okay drunk might have been a strong word, but they were
definitely something.
Nothing like a few shots of alcohol to loosen up your tongue.
“I know. Me too.” She laid her head down on his chest.
That made him feel better for some reason. He slid his arms around her. “Vala.
This isn’t...I mean...”
She met his eyes again. “I’m not playing with you Daniel. I wouldn’t...I’m not
the same person I was when we first met.”
“I know that.” As soon as he said it, he realized he did know. He probably had
on some level for a while now.
Then he did kiss her. Long, deep, and god did she taste good. Her lips were so
soft, and when she kissed him back he melted. He hadn’t felt like this in a
long time. Loved. Wanted. She moaned when he bit her lip. Then he slid his
tongue inside and she shuddered, her hair fell against his face.
Then Meg Ryan started having an orgasm.
They both started laughing. Vala crawled over to the remote and muted the TV.
He grabbed her and pulled her back against him. She tried to look annoyed and
failed. He kissed her on the nose and she snuggled up to him.
“Daniel.”
“Yeah.
“I love this night.”
“Me too.”
“I think we hooked up when we were stuck on that ship,” she whispered.
“Me too,” he said without hesitation.
“Do you think we can get a kitten?”
“What?”
“They are so cute.”
“You are drunk,” he laughed.
“Maybe a little. But I meant everything I said.”
“I know.”
He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against hers. He felt himself
falling asleep on his not so comfortable floor with Vala in his arms. He was
almost lost in dreamland when he heard, “Are you sure we can’t get a kitten?”
Daniel just laughed. At least he knew he’d never be bored. “Ask me again in the
morning. For now, sleep.”
Then she slid her hands down his pants and he knew he wouldn’t be going to
sleep anytime soon. Not that he was complaining.
His hands did some exploring of their own. Daniel finally had everything he
needed. He just wished it hadn’t taken so long for him to see it.
