AUTHOR’S NOTES: Thanks to taraleesg1, who was my amazing beta on this one, as always. I’m reading the book If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland right now so this was greatly influenced by what it has taught me so far.

Pain invaded her mind, rushing like an evil river. Rapids of fear crashed against her. Grabbing the bars that confined her, she tried to scramble further away from the Prior. Torture she had endured before, but this was far worse. Not only was it physically draining, but her mental defenses were continually beaten down. It was as if some annoying creature was clawing and burrowing its way through her thoughts. The only thing she could concentrate on was the person who always gave her strength: Daniel.
In her mind, his face was a constant. Even with the Prior beating “Hallowed are the Ori” into her mind, she could see every feature of the man she had come to know so well. Blue eyes glinted before her, seen by her mind’s eye, giving her hope. Full lips parted, telling her to focus and hold on longer. Seeing his face, looking into his eyes, gave her the will to fight back against the Prior inflicted agony that was filling her mind.
Even though everything looked like it was going to crash and burn, Vala still clawed and scratched to keep from falling down into insanity. Daniel would find a way to save her; he always did. Keeping her focus on his face would be just enough to keep the Prior’s tormenting at bay until she could be rescued. In a situation that was beating her down, almost crushing her, Daniel gave her the strength to hold out just a little longer. That was all Vala ever needed: Daniel.
