They were working, again, sifting through endless piles of
papers, books, and transcripts. The search for Merlin’s weapon was heading
toward a dead end, and everyone had stepped up their efforts in the last week.
It had started about the fourth hour in. Vala was leaning heavily on the
counter, two books beneath her, when Daniel had moved to work beside her.
“Hey scoot over…you’re pushing me off the edge of the counter.” She said,
lightly pushing him away which she found surprisingly easy.
He countered, placing a firm hand on her hip and giving a gentle, playful push.
She punched him in the arm, and he laughed, tickling her until she squealed.
Vala moved her books to the other end of the counter and tried to concentrate.
Five minutes later, he scooted down next to her, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
Daniel poked her side and she pulled away from him.
“Stop it.”
“Stop what?” Daniel inquired…voice guilty with mischief.
“You know what.” Vala’s tone was even angrier this time.
Daniel shot her a quick look of confusion, but continued his barrage anyway,
poking her side, and ginning as she threw her pencil down in frustration.
Vala lowered her head into her hands, sighing.
“Stop flirting.” She said, lifting her head to give him her most serious look.
“I’m not flirting.” This time his tone was completely serious, and he possibly
even sounded disgusted at the accusation.
Vala pulled away from the counter, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Oh
please Daniel!” She marched over to the door of his lab, her face buried in the
dull grey metal. “You’re flirting and you don’t mean it and it’s infuriating
and I hate you.”
Vala turned her head slightly just enough to see him standing there, mouth
agape and that familiar look on his face. “Good bye.” Her words came out
roughly as she exited, tears welling up in her eyes.
A few long seconds later Daniel shouted at the door and didn’t expect a
response.
He ran after her.
He found her a few halls away and grabbed her arm roughly, attempting to stop
her. She struggled in his grip, but quickly gave up, face turned away from him.
“So you’re allowed to play with me however you want, but I have to sit idly by
and act like the good little pet huh? Is that how it is Vala?” He didn’t care
that at least four airmen, and a few nurses were standing right there, hearing
every single word.
Despite her best efforts, Vala’s head whipped around, staring him straight in
the eyes. Her cheeks were stained with tears, and she felt completely exposed.
She tugged once more at the grip around her arm, and felt herself freed of him.
“My intentions were completely clear from day one Daniel, and you’ve gone
pretty far out of your way to make yours known too.”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about!” His voice was just a little louder
than he wanted it to be, and Daniel winced.
“Oh don’t I? You’re honestly going to stand there and claim that all those
times you rejected me was complete bullshit? You’ve suddenly decided to change
your mind about me and I’m just supposed to accept that, am I?”
He grabbed both her shoulders, pulling her closer to him, staring into her icy
grey eyes. “It’s not like that Vala.” Now his voice was tinted with
desperation, and his breath came in short spouts.
Vala didn’t pull away from him, but peered intently at the floor, letting her
head fall heavily toward her chest. “Just please don’t do it if you don’t mean
it.” Her words were almost a whisper, and she was crying again.
Daniel reached for her face; both hands gently pulling her up to look at him.
Her eyes were pools of water, and her chest moved rhythmically up and down to
the beat of his own heart. Cupping her face with his hands, he carefully pulled
her that last few inches, pressing his lips down hard on hers.
She stood still for the first few moments, slowly relaxing, eventually
returning the kiss with every inch of her being.
When he pulled back his eyes were still closed, and when he opened them, she
was crying again, but almost smiling. He planted his forehead gently against
hers. “You have no idea how much I mean it.”
