“Daniel,” Vala said finally. She had been sitting in Daniel’s office for about an hour, working up the nerve to ask him the question that was on her mind.

“Yeah?” Daniel asked, not lifting his gaze from the book he was reading and making notes from.

“I heard that there is this fair, and I was wondering…” she said nervously biting her lower lip.

“Sure,” Daniel replied looking up and smiling at her. “We could all use a break.”

“Really?” Vala asked hopefully, her eyes brightening with excitement.

“Yes really,” Daniel said reaching towards Vala, holding out his hand, which she automatically took as he pulled her closer. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“I don’t know,” Vala said softly and shyly as Daniel pulled her by her hand and into his embrace. His arm wrapped around her waist as Vala fell comfortably onto his lap.

“I’ll take you to the fair,” Daniel smiled softly as he kissed a small pulse point on Vala’s neck.

The two had only been officially together for about two weeks, though out to the rest of the base, and their friends since the morning. Daniel was slightly afraid that the rest of the team would find it awkward that two members of the team were not only together as friends, but romantically, seemed a bit weird.

Daniel had proven to be very touchy-feely. He made sure that he was always in reach of Vala, and when they were alone, he’d have his hand in hers, on the small of her back, on her hip caressing the small amount of skin between her shirt and pants. He’d hold her in his arms as they laid in bed, slipping behind her, his arms wrapping around her stomach, as he spooned against her back, his lips placed against her hair.

Vala seemed surprisingly shy about the entire relationship, not knowing what to do or say more of the time, or how to react with how Daniel showed his affection. She was afraid of getting hurt, but somehow she knew that he’d never hurt her.

The next day, after lunch, the team of SG-1 all climbed into the SUV they got from the base, as neither Cam’s, Sam’s or Daniel’s car would fit all five of them comfortably.

“Shotgun!” Teal’c said as everyone nodded trying to suppress a laugh and allowed their friend to sit in the front seat. Climbing into the back, Sam and Daniel ended up putting Vala in the centre. Driving to the fair was an adventure, Vala kept leaning over Daniel to look outside and she playfully fought with Teal’c for control of the radio station. Cameron was threatening to turn on Sponge Bob Square Pants to punish her if she didn’t settle down.

As soon as Daniel’s hand touched her arm, Vala smiled and leaned closer into his body. “Daniel, when we get to the fair, will you go on the rides with me?”

“Sure,” Daniel said as Cameron pulled into the parking lot.

“Ah crap, it’s pay parking,” Cameron grumbled as he pulled up to the parking attendant. “Hey there.”

“Fifteen even,” the young woman said.

“Fifteen bucks? This is fair robbery,” Cameron grumbled, “I'm a lt. colonel in the Air Force, a war hero, why in the hell am I paying for parking...”

“I’m a graduate student at Denver University, and working at a fair during the summer, you wanna talk about unfair?” the girl asked as Cameron just ducked his head in embarrassment.

“Just park Cam,” Sam said hitting the back of his head. Nodding, Cameron drove up and down the aisles until he found a space.

“So I have to pay for parking and try and find a place and its like five minutes away from the gate! Is that anyway to treat a hero?”

“Shut up,” Sam said slapping his arm. “Its not that far, lets just get our armbands and get in.”

“Daniel, what’s that?” Vala asked as she wrapped her arms around Daniel’s arm and gestering to the large wheel.

“That’s a Ferris wheel, I’ll take you on it,” Daniel explained.

“Before you eat, or you’ll barf,” Cameron added. “Carter, I dare you to go on the space ship!”

“You kidding, I’ve been through astronaut training, that’ll be a cakewalk,” Sam grinned as the five approached the gate. Paying to get in, and buying their arm bands for all the rides, Sam grabbed Teal’c’s hand and smiled as they walked around the fair.

“Daniel what’s that?” Vala asked pointing to a row of carnival games.

“Games, come on, we’ll go play. Teal’c, you want to do a couple?” Daniel asked as he somehow slipped his hand around Vala’s as he pulled her slightly towards the brightly coloured booths.

“Yes,” Teal’c said with almost an amount of mirth lingering in his voice.

“Do you get to win those stuffed things?” Vala asked as the five approached a booth.

“You gonna win the pretty ladies a teddybear?” the carnie asked as he leaned on his counter and winked.

“Sure,” Cameron grinned. “T, Jackson you in?”

“Indeed,” Teal’c said as Daniel nodded and let go of Vala’s hand. Reaching over he grabbed the balls that the carnie handed them.

“Get all the balls in the centre and these pretty ladies get to pick whatever they want.”

“We can do that,” Cameron said cheekily as Sam and Vala stepped to the side. Teal’c got all his balls in one try, it took Daniel two, and Cameron just gave up saying that he was never really that good at throwing small balls into holes.

Leaving that booth, Vala was carrying a rather large stuffed frog and Sam had a large stuffed bunny, as well as a tiara for Vala and a bracelet for Sam.

“What else is there to do?” Vala asked as she griped Daniel’s hand, trying not to bounce in excitement.

“There are more games,” Daniel said pointing to a child’s game that he thought Vala could do.

“Oooh! That looks fun!” Vala said nearly jumping and pulling Daniel towards the booth.

“Come on up!” the carnie called. “Where is your daddy, you’re too young to be walking around the fair alone,” he said to Vala who was about to say something as Daniel reached up and touched her lips. “You think you can win?”

“Uh huh,” Vala nodded as Daniel handed the carnie the money as Vala took a hold of the gun. “Just fill up the balloon?”

“You betcha little girl,” the Carnie smiled as Vala grinned and pointed the water gun directly at its corresponding hole and shot. A few moments later the red balloon filled up with water and she jumped up triumphantly.

“Amazing, what did you want Princess?”

Vala looked at Daniel before she pointed to a large shaggy lion. Once it was in her arms, Vala hugged onto it and smiled brightly.

“ColonelCarter, would you like a large stuffed elephant?” Teal’c asked looking at Sam.

“Thanks Teal’c,” Sam grinned brightly as Teal’c nodded his head and walked over another game, handing the girl his money as he picked up the hammer. With one hit the bell rang, another hit another ding, and another one almost broke the game.

“You’re pretty strong,” the girl smiled. “What prize did you want?”

“The large stuffed elephant for ColonelCarter,” Teal’c said as the young girl handed Sam the elephant.

“You got a great man,” she said as Sam laughed and held her new stuffed elephant, that’d sit on her bed.

“He’s just my friend,” Sam smiled as she walked towards the group, as Vala was dragging them to the different booths. No one could blame her, it was her first fair, and she seemed happy.

After spending an hour winning prizes for the girls, the five made their way over to the food area. Cameron had basically bribed the gate guards to allow him to put all the prizes in the SUV and not have to pay for re-entry. Once Sam and Vala gave Cameron their stuffed animals and purchases from the booths selling things, the five sat down as each decided what to eat.

“Okay, I’m gonna grab some Chinese,” Cameron said as he stood up. “Anyone else?”

“I think I want pizza,” Sam said standing up, the three making their way to grab food, leaving Daniel and Vala alone at the table.

“Are you having fun?” Daniel asked as he gently stroked the top of Vala’s hand with his thumb.

“Yes,” Vala smiled. “Daniel, thank you.”

“Always,” he smiled as Vala moved her chair over and slipped under his arm. When the three members of SG-1 came back, Daniel and Vala stood up themselves to get food.

Upon returning and noticing that there was only one seat available, Vala plopped herself on Daniel’s lap and set her food beside his. Sam smirked into her pizza as Teal’c did what Teal’c always did, and continued to eat his food.

“So what we doing after dinner?” Cameron asked as she shoved an eggroll in his mouth.

“I want to go on the rides,” Vala said as she picked a chicken strip off of Daniel’s plate.

“Don’t go on the fast ones, you’ll barf,” Cam said as everyone looked at him. “What? Its true. You all know it.”

“He’s got a point,” Sam said reluctantly.

“So we’ll go on the slower ones,” Daniel said putting a chicken strip into his mouth, just as Vala snagged it away. “Hey, give that back.”

“No,” Vala smiled taking a bite as Daniel leaned forward, completely intent on taking it back, but instead he kissed her. It wasn’t a sexual kind of kiss, but soft and sweet, and completely innocent. Pulling back Vala smiled and ducked her head as Daniel slipped an arm around her, resting his hand on her stomach.

After dinner, Vala stayed basically glued to Daniel’s side, hands entwined with each other, as they made their way to the rides. Cameron had dared everyone to go on the spaceship at least once, and when Sam went on it three times in a row, and came out still walking straight and not dizzy at all, she was declared the winner. Teal’c came out a bit green, Cameron threw up after his second time in a row, Vala came out a tad dizzy and just leaned into Daniel, who opted to stay and hold the girls’ purses and Teal’c gold-fishes.

Daniel laughed softly as he opened his arms to Vala who fell into his arms with a giggle. Kissing her nose, he helped her stand up straight.

“Have fun?”

“Yes darling,” Vala smiled. “That was better than going through the,” looking around and leaning into his ear. “stargate.”

“I bet,” Daniel smiled as he noticed the farris wheel opened up. “Come on,” he said pulling her body with his.

Once on the ride, Daniel wrapped his arm over her shoulders and took her hand with his opposite. Vala looked at Daniel and smiled, ducking her head she leaned into his body slightly. His hand felt warm over hers and she loved it. Never once did she think she could be so attached to a man’s hand. But Daniel’s…she was.

All the men in her life, their hands were a source of discipline, pain and torture, but Daniel’s, his although rough with work and life, they were soft and caring and brought only love and affection. His hands caressing hers, softly running through her hair, tracing her lips and curves, the goosebumps they left behind, the warmth they caused. No pain, no hurt, just comfort and love.

Vala looked over at Daniel and cuddled into his side. “Daniel?”

“Hmm?”

“This is great, thank you,” she said softly as the ride started. Daniel smiled and brought her hand to his lips and kissed it softly.

Yeah, it wasn’t about their relationship as a whole, it was about how his hands made her feel alive
