Let this old life crumble

Let it fade

Let this new life offer be your saving grace.

-Let It Fade, Jeremy Camp

Vala stared at the flat wooden box General Landry had just given her. It was light in her hands, the polished surface cool on her fingertips. As she lifted the lid, the case suddenly felt heavier when she glimpsed the two small embroidered circles inside. She recognized their meaning immediately.

They represented all that Vala had worked hard for over the past year. SG-1 was like an elite club you could only get into by being invited after you had proved yourself worthy. Now she was part of that club, that family. Vala was overwhelmed with the joy that bubbled up inside her. She looked up from the box and saw the smiles of those around her. Though her memory was still fuzzy, she distinctly remembered the wonderful dynamic they all shared.

Vala smiled wider when she caught Daniel’s gaze, his face beaming with happiness. She knew she couldn’t have made it this far without him. They had fought with each other, against the Goa’uld, and Priors of the Ori. They had faced many enemies and dangers but they always came out on the other side together. Vala had fought for him and him for her.

Finally Vala had climbed the mountain of circumstance and situation that had controlled her life before coming to Earth. Daniel had been at the top, encouraging her the whole way. No longer was she the thief no one trusted, she was now a member of the first line team of defense for Earth. Not only did Daniel trust her, but they all trusted her with the responsibility of being able to tip the balance of the galaxy’s survival one way or the other.

In Daniel’s eyes Vala could see the memory of every moment they had together. Meeting him on the Prometheus, burning in the Ori galaxy, destroying the Ori beachhead, and Daniel rescuing her on more than one occasion, she saw them all. He had done something for her no one else had ever done. He had believed in her, heart and soul.

At a time when all Vala knew was running away, Daniel had stilled her body and her restless spirit. He'd taken her far away from the lies and treachery of her old life. This was her new life; where she belonged. Daniel was the now the pivot point at which her world turned. She made every decision with the hope of pleasing him. Her life before Daniel seemed distant and grey now, like a faded old photograph. This new life however played across her mind in vibrant Technicolor. Joining Stargate Command and then SG-1 was like Dorothy stepping off the porch into Oz in that movie Teal’c had invited her to watch a couple months ago.

Sam, Teal’c, and Mitchell talked but all Vala thought about was Daniel. He was the one who had given her this opportunity at a new life. For that, she was forever grateful. She would show her gratitude by endlessly nagging him to take her on another “date”. That’s why she loved him though. He would sit and be patient until he could get a word in. Mostly that word was “No”, but still, any word from Daniel was worth hearing more than once.

Vala proudly showed off her new patches as the team went through the concrete halls of Cheyenne Mountain. She was next to Daniel the entire way to the parking lot. As they walked to one of the black SUV’s that belonged to the base, she slipped her hand into his. Normally, Daniel would have shaken it off, but he grasped her small hand tighter, interweaving their fingers together. Vala knew he thought it was a way of saying thank you. She however knew it was something more, deep down. Their lives were becoming joined together, faster and in more ways than they expected.
