CHAPTER 1: It Was Never
It wasn’t enough. Not enough for Vala to stay. Packing her bag, she looked around the bedroom, the picture of her and Daniel, arms wrapped around each other and smiling at the camera at Sam and Jack’s engagement party. Angrily she reached for the frame and threw it across the room. The glass shattered and she walked over picking the picture up. Staring at it, she ripped it in half and threw it onto the bed.
Tears ran down her cheeks, as she felt the pain in her heart intensify. Daniel, he wasn’t giving enough. Wasn’t there enough…It wasn’t enough.
She couldn’t do it anymore. It was never enough effort, the love was there, but there was never enough. Choking back her tears, Vala closed her bag and swung it over her shoulders before she walked out of the bedroom and down the hall. Hearing the door open she wiped her eyes and continued strong through out the house until she reached the front door.
"Vala?" Daniel asked. "Where are you going?"
"I’m leaving," she replied sharply.
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked grabbing her arm preventing her from leaving.
"I can’t do this anymore Daniel," Vala replied.
"Do what?" Daniel demanded shutting the door as to no one would see.
"Be with you, for god sakes Daniel! You spend more time anywhere BUT here with me!" Vala screamed before she took off the ring that was placed on her right ring finger. Holding it up so that the diamond twinkled with light before she chucked it at him.
"Vala!" Daniel called letting the ring hit him before it fell to the floor and she opened the door and walked down. "For gods sakes Vala!"
"No Daniel! Its Not enough just to love me, you have to WANT me!"
Standing for a moment he stared at her before he charged after her, grabbing her arm and pulling her body to him. "There is nothing but you. There’s no books, no life, no knowledge, no NOTHING without you."
"Let go of me," she growled as Daniel loosened his grip on her wrist. "You have a great way of showing it don’t you Daniel."
"Oh come off it! You know I love you."
"I know you love me, but that’s not enough! You have to WANT to be with me!" Vala yelled as doors around the block opened and people opened their curtains to watch the fight between the quiet couple.
"Just go!" Daniel yelled.
It wasn’t enough. There wasn’t enough, never was, ever would be enough.
CHAPTER 2: A New Beginning
It was aboard the Prometheus when they first met. She was stunning, and presently kicked his ass. Though that wasn’t the beginning of anything, he didn’t know if they’d ever see each other again, but then she came to the SGC. That changed everything. He started to feel something for her, and she for him. He could tell. Then she sacrificed herself, and he finally realised that he was in love with her. He held out hope, and she finally came back to him. It took everything he had inside him not to grab her and never let her go.
She had a baby, loved her baby, though she felt a little bitter over the entire ordeal.
"Daniel?" Vala whispered softly walking over to Daniel and resting her chin on his shoulder.
"Hey," he whispered with a smile.
"What are you thinking about?" She asked as Daniel pushed his chair out and pulled Vala onto his lap.
"Just about us," Daniel teased. "You know what, I think I love you."
"Really, I know I love you," Vala grinned kissing the tip of his nose.
"Good," Daniel whispered moving his head so that he inched closer to her mouth, caressing her lips with his own. Moving his fingers slightly, they dipped into the sides of Vala’s pants and caressed the skin of her hips.
"Daniel, what were you thinking about?" Vala asked softly.
"Just our beginning," Daniel replied softly. "Don’t worry, its just the beginning, never the end."
CHAPTER 3: It Always Leads Back
There it was. Daniel looked at the ring and stared again. It was perfect. Not to flashy. Not to simple. Just Perfect. It was Vala. And was going to cost him a fortune. But for her? Anything. She was a princess. She knew she was a Princess and wanted to be treated like one. So why shouldn’t he spend his money on her? On a ring that she’d never take off; hell she’d leave it on her finger and most likely attract as many off world enemies as possible with its sparkle.
Yeah, she’d love it. After all, her new favourite saying was ‘A diamond is a girls best friend!’ He’d have to thank Sam for putting that idea in her head.
"Have you decided on one?" the salesman asked walking back up to Daniel, after leaving him to help another customer.
He was left standing in Tiffany’s staring at the diamonds. He had picked the diamond.
"Yeah, umm...that one," Daniel said pointing to the silver ring, with a Tiffany’s setting of a heart shaped diamond.
"That’s a beautiful ring," the man smiled pulling it out and letting Daniel touch it. "Will the future wife like it?"
"She’ll love it," Daniel said. "It reminds me of a tiara she has."
"A real Princess?" the man asked as Daniel nodded.
"Yeah," Daniel smiled. "She’s one of a kind. She thinks she’s the center of the universe." The man chuckled as he handed Daniel the blue Tiffany’s box with the ring.
"Is that everything?"
"Yeah," Daniel said pulling out his Visa and giving the man his card. A few minutes later, Daniel walked out of the store, ring box in pocket and feeling a tad bit relieved. Also a tad bit worried, he had a fifty-thousand dollar diamond in his pocket. A diamond for Vala… An engagement diamond for Vala. He was going to propose to Vala, with a diamond.
A diamond. He should just get over the fact that proposals always end up with a diamond ring and diamonds aren’t that scary. So it wouldn’t be just him, it would be him, Vala and a diamond. He HAD to get over the diamond.
"Get over it Daniel," he said to himself getting into his car. He was thinking of buying a jeep…But wait! He just spent all his savings for a new vehicle on diamond. God he was so stupid. Stupid in love. Wow, that was corny.
Leaning over he banged his head on the steering wheel before putting the car in neutral and driving towards his apartment. Their apartment. They were living together. Having sex together. Sex, Vala, Diamond…Well technically it would be Vala plus Diamond equals sex. There he goes. Back to the diamond.
This was going to be the last diamond he’d ever buy her. Nope no more. One diamond, the other ring could be of white gold, or maybe silver…but no more diamonds. They affected him.
He’d never given a woman a diamond before. Nope. Never. Never given a woman any type of ring. Vala was the first. She was a lot of firsts, first woman he hated before he fell in love with her. The first woman he lived with before marriage, and the first one he was going to propose too. With a Diamond.
What did everything he think always come back to the diamond. It was a rock for god’s sake. Just a rock.
Parking the car, Daniel made his way up the stairs to his apartment. Vala had decided that if they were going to live together, they should get a nicer apartment than the one room small cramped space he lived in before. They ended up moving into a two bedroom apartment, which was more like a loft than an apartment. Though then again, he shouldn’t complain, he spent more money on the diamond than the apartment. There he went AGAIN.
Walking into the apartment he threw his jacked down on a chair and walked into the kitchen, where Vala was, wearing nothing but a pair of his boxers and her bra as she danced around in circles. Daniel laughed and quickly caught her spinning.
"Hi," Vala smiled.
"Hi," Daniel replied with a small laugh. "How was your morning?"
"Oh great fun," Vala chuckled. "I got up, showered, shaves my legs," she said lifting her leg up as Daniel’s hand felt the smooth soft skin of her leg.
"Nice," Daniel smiled as he naturally picked her up, as her legs wrapped around his waist.
"What did you do?" Vala asked softly as her fingers went to the buttons of his shirt.
"I went and bought something," Daniel replied letting one arm hold Vala steady before he dugged into his pocket producing the diamond. He wasn’t nervous about the ring now, it was a diamond for a diamond in the rough.
"What’s this?" Vala asked with a grin taking the box and opening it up. "Daniel?"
"It’s a diamond ring," Daniel started. "In earth’s culture, it’s supposed to symbolise…"
"And engagement to be married," Vala finished as a huge smile ran over her face. The next thing Daniel knew, the diamond was placed on her finger, the box thrown off and he was being straddled, by the woman wearing the diamond. The diamond wasn’t such a scary thing anymore.
CHAPTER 4: A New Life
"GET THIS THING OUT OF ME!" Vala yelled as she gripped the bed as the pains of labor ripped through her stomach causing a great deal of pain.
"Just breathe," Daniel whispered as he rubbed his wife’s arm soothingly.
"Easy for you to say! You’re the one who stuck your penis in me!" Vala yelled as Daniel closed his eyes, remembering it was just the labor.
"I’m sorry, I’ll never do it again," Daniel replied softly.
"Damn right you wont," she growled as the pain subsided and they couple looked at the doctor.
"Almost. Did you have a name picked out for the baby yet?" the young woman asked.
"Connor Aaron," Daniel replied as he smiled at Vala who smiled back. The birth of their first child together, something they were both looking forward to. They had discussed names back and forth and since both were convinced that the baby was a boy, even from the ultrasound they settled on Connor and Aaron, so his name would be Connor Aaron Jackson-Mal Doran.
"That’s a pretty name," Carolyn smiled walking into the room. "What are we at Dr. Russell?"
"Seven and a half centimeters. We can start at her next contraction."
"Okay, Vala do you think you can start pushing when your next contraction comes?" With Vala’s nod, Daniel let go of her hand and climbed in behind her, making sure she was secure between his legs. Wrapping his arms around her, Daniel secured hers, making sure she wouldn’t fling him or hurt herself in the process.
Taking a breath, Vala held onto Daniel’s hands and leaned back.
The birth of a baby, their baby. The idea of the baby first scared him, he didn’t know if he was ready to be a father, especially to a baby, who was all helpless and needed him and Vala to take care of. The idea of the birth scared him even more, as a scientist he knew the dangers of giving birth, he knew the pain (well, not really but he could say he did!), he knew the trouble and couldn’t do anything to take Vala’s pain. All he could do, was sit there, soothing her softly and listen to the threats that his penis was going to be cut off. He’d never again see light of day, and of course, never allowed to touch her again. Ever again, and it was all his fault. After all, he was the man, and it was his fault, well not really his, but it was his penis’ fault. Yup, it was all about his son….
"It’s a girl," Carolyn smiled pulling the screaming baby out of Vala who collapsed in Daniel’s arms.
"What?" Daniel asked shaking his head. "The ultrasound said it was a boy…"
"Well, they can be wrong, and in this case it was," she said placing the baby into Vala’s arms.
"She’s beautiful," Vala whispered running her finger over the babies nose.
"Do we have a name for her?" Carolyn asked.
"Conner Airan," Daniel replied. "C-O-N-N-E-R space A-I-R-A-N."
"You gave my girl a boys name," Vala chuckled.
"Our girl."
