Sitting her tray down in front of her, Vala sat herself across a table from Daniel. He glanced up at her briefly, then returned his attention to whatever it was he was reading, apparently ignoring her. She stuck her tongue out at the top of his down-turned head.

“I saw that,” he said without looking up.

Vala gave an indignant “Hmmph!” and turned her attention to her food. She’d eaten nearly all of it before the silence became too much for her to bear. All there was left on her plate were three brightly colored eggs and a small chocolate bunny—the commissary’s small way of celebrating an Earth holiday Vala had heard quite a bit about: Easter.

She grabbed one of the eggs and examined it for a moment. “Daniel, why are there so many colors?” she asked. The one in her hand was bright pink, of course, and the other two on her plate were blue and purple, respectively. “Is there a difference?”

Daniel looked up. “Only in the colors of the dye,” he answered. “They’re all plain white eggs that are dyed especially for Easter.”

“Oh.” She looked over her egg again. “Why?”

“Well, eggs symbolize new life,” he answered. “As to why we dye them…” He shrugged. “It’s just an unexplained old English custom, thought to have originated in Ancient Rome.”

“Ah.” Carefully, Vala sat down her bright pink egg beside the blue and purple ones. She wasn’t quite ready to eat it yet. She picked up the chocolate bunny instead. “And how do the bunnies fit into all of this?”

Frowning, Daniel scratched his head for a moment before realization—or remembrance—washed over his face. “Rabbits are a symbol of fertility… and since fertility causes new life…”

“Ah.” After glancing down at her chocolate again, Vala looked back up at Daniel with a grin. “Well, I always did like bunnies…”
