Lies. Lying. It had always come naturally to Vala, which was why she had built such a lucrative career around deception. Over the years she had grown skilled at telling people what they’d wanted to hear, saying what they’d needed to hear. Not once had she ever second-guessed herself, but as she sat down on the bed in her quarters her mind began to race and she became increasingly uncertain of whether she had made the right decision. Usually she lied in order to save her own skin or to manipulate someone into giving her what she wanted, but not this time. This time she had lied to save someone else, she had lied to save him.

Her mother, Tomin, Adria - all gone now. It seemed that people had a habit of dying around her and she simply hadn’t been able to bear the thought of holding his dead body in her arms…not after she had come so close once before. Even now, months later, she still remembered the smell of his hair and the warmth of his skin against her cheek as she’d held his body in the cold cell of Adria‘s fortress. It was a feeling and an image burned into her memory forever.

One simple question, one honest answer. He hadn’t asked for anything more. All he wanted was the truth, but her heart simply couldn’t allow her to give it to him.

Do you love me?

No.

She had lied to save him, but in doing so had denied herself the one thing that had never been a lie.
