There were choices to be made. Those choices whether be good or bad were still that, choices. Whether or not these choices were easy, well, that was up for major debate.

And one of the choices was about to happen and there was nothing Daniel could do but make it. Vala had asked him to make it, and that conversation was stuck in his head.

She stared at him. Her eyes brimming with tears as her body clenched up in fear, anticipation and hope.

“What do you want me to say Vala?” Daniel asked in near anger. “That I care for you? That everything will be all right? That I can’t live without you? What? Tell me so that I can get it over with and get on with my life!”

“You need to make a choice Daniel,” Vala said as a tear slipped from her eye. “You need to choose between whether you want your feelings or your pride to rule your life.”

A silence between the two could be cut with a knife and Daniel knew a decision had to be made.

So what was he going to choose? If he let his pride win, then he’d lose the one woman in this world he cared about. However on the other side, if he let his feelings for her win, then he’d have to chose a life of being solely with her or doing what he always wanted to do.

Granted the choice should have been easy, his feelings for Vala outweighed his pride, but for some reason, being with her and just her he couldn’t fathom. Which led to his confusion as to whether his feelings for Vala were true or just there out of desperation. Sure he loved her, with everything he had, she was the only one he could see himself with. But could he honestly be himself without working or going to Atlantis?

Was risking a relationship with Vala worth going to Atlantis, or was not going to Atlantis worth spending a life time with Vala? How did he know this relationship would last a life time? He was damaged, Vala was damaged…they both came with baggage, but could they get past that and be together? Daniel didn’t know anymore…

Sighing, Daniel sunk into his chair and tossed his pencil onto the desk. Looking around the darkened room, the ability to make the decision was defiantly not in this room. Pushing his chair aside, Daniel left the dark office and walked down the corridors of the SGC. The steal walls, the dim lights completely defined his mood.

Turning a corner, Daniel wandered into the commissary. It was empty, not a soul in sight. The serving trays were empty, the rack of what had become to be known as the Jello Rack, empty but for a one cup-which was empty. Walking to an empty table, Daniel sat down and stared at the wall.

Choices he had to make, he was never very good at. His earliest recollection of having to make a choice was the day his parents died. That choice was not his alone, but it was still difficult. The funeral, and the decision to move into the first foster family, the choice of what university to go to, what girl to lose his virginity too, where to get his masters and doctorate degrees, to let Sarah leave, to take Catherine Langford up on her offer.

But all those choices mattered nothing to this one. This was the hardest he ever had to make and Daniel didn’t know if he could truly be happy if he said no. Was it no to her or to Atlantis?

Standing up again, Daniel left the commissary. He had made his choice. Walking down the halls, he felt that for the first time the choice was easy.

Approaching the door, Daniel opened it. The room was dark and silent. Knowing his quarters, Daniel stripped off his BDU’s and made his way over to the bed. Placing his glasses on the night stand, he drew back the covers and crawled in. Moving towards the center of the bed, Daniel’s arms slipped around the body that already occupied the bed. His face nuzzled her hair as he whispered into her ear.

“I choose you.” And that was all Daniel needed, to know that he had might the right choice, a response that was Vala’s soft sigh and melting into his embrace. “I’ll always choose you.”
