AUTHOR’S NOTES:
Apparently, having fed the addiction once, I am now unable to stop
myself. This isn’t beta’d, and it was written at
“Stop.”
Her eyes darted from side to side and her mouth opened to protest, but he held
up a hand and looked at her angrily.
“Just stop, Vala.”
“Daniel, what…”
“I’m tired of hearing you talk like we’re going to throw you out the soonest
chance we get. Of hearing you relate to yourself like you don’t affect anyone.”
Her entire posture radiated withdrawal into herself, the erection of a shield
to keep his words at bay. He moved closer to her so that even though she was mentally
closing off, he could touch her; make her feel him there.
“You’re here now, you know? It doesn’t matter that I don’t know what it’s like
out there. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have a stash horded away ‘in case
of an emergency.’ You’re not alone.”
Here he reached out to touch her, and flinched when she stepped back. He pushed
forward and he found himself in a childish game of cat-and-mouse around his
office. He had known that getting her to release the years of survival skills
and habits wouldn’t be easy, but he was hoping that he would avoid the painful.
“You don’t know, Daniel.” she said softly, deep eyes pleading with him to let
her go.
“No, I don’t, Vala. I can’t say that I’ve been a
host. I can’t say that I’ve had to run from planet to planet, fearing for my
life; I’ve always had a safe haven to come home to.” He saw a flash of anger
and fear cross her face and stepped closer to her, relieved to see her keep her
ground. The Vala he knew didn’t back away from much.
“You have that now.” He stepped closer again. “Here.”
He felt his chest constrict when he saw the tears gathering in her eyes. One
more step.
“I need you to believe it, Vala.”
Another step. Her head dropped to the floor and to the
side, her gaze resting on anything but himself and her
teeth worried her bottom lip.
Silently, he raised a hand and laid it on her shoulder, catching her flinch and
quickly drawing her towards him and into a tight embrace.
“Do you know that? Do you know that you have a home now?”
Her fingers tightened into the rough cotton of his jacket and her arms shifted
erratically, desperately trying to hold him closer. Her shoulders shook and he
buried his face into her hair sharing her pain and keeping her together like no
one ever had before. He knew that he knew; knew that her walls were finally
crumbling.
“Daniel.” She said softly, her tone embracing so much. He’d heard it before and
could feel himself responding to the desperation in her. She said so much in
that word that everything in him would have done anything in his power to make
her smile, to laugh and to be the woman that he believed that she could be.
Everything in him wanted to never hear that tone of her voice again.
He knew that she’d never believe something that she’d never experienced; so he
showed her.
