Daniel was walking down the corridor to Vala’s quarters carrying a file of pictures of alien text SG-15 just brought back. He hated asking for her help, but he didn’t recognize the writing so he thought he’d ask her if she recognized it. Hopefully it would lead them to some great Ori defeating weapon, but he doubted it. Daniel slowed as he reached the door he’d become familiar with over the last two years: Vala’s room. Behind the door he could hear the faint noise of the television he had brought in to keep her distracted.

Daniel brought his knuckles down on the door in a soft knock. “Come in!” Vala beckoned, hoping it would be Daniel. He stepped in the door and closed it behind him.

“Hello darling. I thought you’d be buried in work today,” Vala glanced at the papers in his hand then at his furrowed brow. “Oh, you need help don’t you?” she questioned, lips upturned in a smirk.

“Yes, if it’s not too much trouble,” Daniel replied in a tone Vala had come to know in the time she’d been at Stargate Command. It was Daniel’s I’m-already-agitated-don’t-get-me-started tone.

“Of course it’s no trouble. I was just watching some of Batman and Robin. Have you ever seen it? It’s really no different than SG-1. Fighting crime and over the top villains. Cool gadgets. A very attractive hero,” she said with a wink.

“I’m sure it’s very interesting, but I really haven’t had time to watch television lately. You know fighting the Ori, saving the galaxy, and all that.”

“Okay, I get the point, my valiant hero. What has gotten you so confused?” Vala approached with swaying hips and knowing expression, “Besides me.”

Daniel ignored her last comment and handed her the file he had momentarily forgotten was in his hand. “This text, do you recognize it?”

Vala glanced over the pictures carefully. After a few moments she looked back to Daniel. “Sorry. Never seen it before,” Vala felt bad for not being able to help him. Maybe she could help him another way. “Darling you look exhausted. How about you watch some TV with me? This episode of Batman has Cat Woman in it. I really like her. She’s got a good wardrobe,” Vala paused for a moment, hoping she’d swayed him to stay. “I made popcorn.”

Daniel couldn’t remember how long he’d been working for and Vala was right, he was exhausted. Popcorn suddenly sounded good and smelled exceptionally well considering he hadn’t eaten in eight hours. Last time he’d had popcorn was the team’s last movie night at Sam’s house, when he had to sit through Music and Lyrics which Vala had picked. Maybe he would stay, only for a couple minutes. “Fine,” Daniel told her. She replied with a wide smile and grabbed his arm, sitting him down in front of the TV, plopping the bowl of popcorn in his lap.

Feeling her hand on his sleeve, he knew he’d end up being there much longer. Though at times she drove him absolutely insane, he was glad she decided to stay. Daniel spent downtime with the rest of SG-1, but he spent the most of it with Vala. She could take his mind off the battles they faced out there in the universe. With one bright smile she could light the dark corners of his mind that housed the things that frustrated him most. She made him crazy when she was around, but he though he’d go crazy without her.

Vala snuggled up next to him. When she had first come to earth two years ago, she hoped she could gain Daniel’s trust. It was difficult to hope for trust when there was a guard outside your door. Now, she was part of the SGC and SG-1. Most importantly though, she was now an integral part of Daniel’s life. He rested his cheek on her head which was currently on his shoulder. That simple act of comfort and familiarity made Vala feel like she finally found a place she could stay. Somewhere she didn’t have to leave. That place was right at Daniel’s side.
