SEASON/SPOILERS:  Possible spoilers for the second movie “Stargate Continuum”

AUTHOR’S NOTES:  This is a very short Daniel/Vala scene based on spoilers I’ve read for the second film. It just came into my head for some reason when I was supposed to be writing my other DV fanfic, which I was doing instead of actual work. Oh and about the logic/physics of all this. I’m a ‘shipper. I don’t know nor really care since it confuses my small romantic mind. The laws of physics are whatever happens to be convenient for my story. :D

Thanks to Gateworld for the spoilers.

“The seas evaporated,

Though it comes as no surprise.

These clouds we're seeing,

They're explosions in the sky.

It seems it's written,

But we can't read between the lines.”

Daniel ran to the bridge of the ship poised to attack Earth as the battle raged around him. They were at it again, a small voice in the back of his head said with contempt. Messing with timelines. The last time they did that they’d changed the course of history permanently. At least this time they didn’t start it, they just had to fix it.

Trusting Mitchell and Sam to deal with Teal’c and Baal’s forces on the other ship, Daniel had used the rings to get back to the other mothership. Making his way through the chaos, he approached the bridge. Looking inside, he saw Vala's worst nightmare come to vivid life in front of him.

Qetesh stood on the peltak, her personal shield activated and surrounded by the bodies of the soldiers they’d left to protect this ship. Watching her use a hand device on a soldier, Daniel gritted his teeth.

I can’t, he repeated to himself as he stood out of her sight and allowed the soldier to be killed. Qetesh has to believe she’s alone before she’ll lower that shield, and all I’ll do is get killed until she does.

It was a choice between dying pointlessly and having a chance to stop Qetesh before she wiped out a major city from orbit. The decision was easy, the consequences-

He heard the soldier’s body fall to the floor with a dull thud.

Looking around the corner, he saw her survey the room and place a hand to her wrist to lower her shield.

Knowing it wasn’t the Vala from his timeline and that here, she was controlled by a goa’uld, had never attempted to steal the Prometheus (had never kissed him, a subversive voice in his head slipped in), had never joined SG-1, had never saved his life or been his friend…

It didn’t make it easier to shoot her.

“Hush,

It's okay,

Dry your eyes.

Soulmate, dry your eyes,

‘Cause soulmates never die.”

But he did, even if he couldn’t remember pulling the trigger. Even if he were thinking about her sitting on his glasses in his office, her just generally annoying the hell out of him or the way she was when she didn’t remember everything she’d been through. Even if he was only just realising he cared about her more than he was supposed to.

Locking the doors to the peltak and trusting that Sam would get the device working sooner rather than later, Daniel gently turned Vala over and pulled her into his lap. He fought not to jump when her eyes flashed and the symbiote within her died.

She looked from side to side as Daniel fought to keep her still.

“You killed her,” she said quietly to Daniel, the voice of the host.

He nodded slowly. “You know that means I killed you, too.”

She smiled. “It’s okay. You’re the one from earlier… you called Qetesh my name.”

Daniel could only nod, not used to this unfamiliar directness in the same grey eyes.

“How do I know you?” She asked, puzzled.

“This one world vision,

Turns us into compromise.

What good's religion,

When it's each other we despise?”

“You don’t,” he answered. “But I know you. At least, another ver-“

“Another version,” Vala finished with a nod. At his look, she smiled a little tiredly. “Qetesh didn’t just pick me for my looks. Mostly, but not entirely.” She coughed violently and Daniel was unsurprised but saddened when he saw flecks of blood. She looked at him. “Tell me about … her. I need a distraction.”

“A Tok’ra caused a rebellion on Qetesh’s planet. When the mob couldn’t tell the difference between Qetesh and Vala, the tok’ra rescued her and removed the goa’uld. She ended up working with us on Earth to fight,” he paused, knowing the dangers of saying too much and so settled for a less truthful answer. “The goa’uld.”

“Damn the government,

Damn their killing,

Damn their lies.”

“I remember that rebellion,” She said thoughtfully. “Qetesh crushed it in this version. So, do we win?” She asked and winced as the poison began to hit her system. Daniel nodded, brushing a stray strand of hair from her eyes. She grinned fiercely with closed eyes. “That’s good, then. How did I end up with such a sentimental lot?”

“Well, you tried to steal our ship,” he answered with a smile. “And then you tried to seduce me. When that didn’t work you beat me up. Later on you chained us together with kor’mak bracelets and almost annoyed me to death.”

She laughed and coughed from the effort. “I’d apologise, but if it meant I ended up working with you I wouldn’t be that sorry.”

Daniel nodded and kissed her before he could think twice about it. “You’ve also saved all of our lives more than once without a thought for yourself. And I’ve been happier for knowing you, so I’m not sorry either.”

Vala raised a hand to his cheek and met his eyes. “I’m not her, am I? Or else you couldn’t admit defeat and tell me all this.” Her voice was rapidly getting weaker.

“Hush,

It's okay...

Dry your eyes.”

About to answer, his radio crackled. “Daniel,” Sam said, “It worked. We’re about ready to go here.”

“Give me a minute,” Daniel replied tersely, knowing he couldn’t just leave Vala to die alone on a cold floor, even if it wasn’t their Vala.

“Soulmate, dry your eyes,

‘Cause soulmates never die.”

Jackson,” Mitchell replied quickly, “We don’t have a minute.”

He looked at her and she smiled. “Go on, I don’t mind. You’ve made dying more fun than I thought it would be.”

“Soulmate, dry your eyes.”

Daniel ducked his head with a smile, activating the beacon that would shift him to another – hopefully his own – timeline and squeezing her hand. He reached out a hand to touch her cheek, seeing her smile and close her eyes as the world slowly turned white. He wasn’t sure if it was the machine or Vala dying, but her hand grew loose around his in the instant before they faded to their own time.

As her eyes closed of their own will, Vala clenched the hand he’d held as she felt everything turn cold and dark.

“Soulmates never die.”

He opened his eyes slowly to meet familiar grey ones crackling with energy.

“I know you,” He said groggily.

“Well, of course you do, silly,” She replied, looking worried. “It’s me, Vala.”

He simply nodded and sighed in relief, seeing other familiar figures standing nearby. They’d made it back, all of them.

“He’s awake!” Vala called out to the other end of the infirmary, jumping back and shattering the moment.

Reaching a hand to his ear, Daniel looked at her. “He’s not deaf,” He grumbled in a low voice, concealing a smile.

A few days later and after being given a clean bill of health by Dr. Lam, Daniel was accompanied out of the infirmary by Vala. About half way to his office, she stopped.

“This is where I turn off. I’m going to hit the gym for a little while.” She looked at him with a smile. “I’ve been slacking while you were being all, you know, comatose.”

Daniel ducked his head with an answering smile. “Rubbish excuse if you ask me.”

“Good thing I didn’t ask you, then,” She said, hitting him playfully on the arm as she walked away.

Watching her, Daniel hesitated. “Vala, wait!”

She stopped and he caught up with her. “Daniel, I know I normally win but it’s a bit early to be sparring again, don’t you think?”

“Funny. Really.” He narrowed his eyes and looked at her. “I was actually … ah… wondering what you were doing this Friday.”

“Nothing. Why?” Vala asked, raising an eyebrow. “Two friends and co-workers spending time together?”

“Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of finishing that date or starting another one,” Daniel said, walking away with a smile and congratulating himself on getting the last word for once.

“Hush,

It's okay.

Dry your eyes.

Soulmate, dry your eyes,

‘Cause soulmates never die.”
