WARNINGS:  Subtle references to torture

AUTHOR’S NOTES:  Keep in mind this wasn’t beta’d.  Based on the fact that the time during which Daniel was ascended was about the same time Vala was being tortured by the Tok’ra.

Hope had fled like a ghost, almost as if it was never there at all. Pain had become a constant, nagging reality of her situation. Comfort was a far-off memory, soon to be forgotten entirely. Despair had become her companion; fear her guide. They both told her there was no way out, no chance of escape. However, there was another voice, one that sat beside her in her crystal cell.

“You can’t give up now,” the masculine voice told her. “Your future is for you to decide. Only you can choose to continue on your journey.”

The words seemed wise, leaving a small glimmer of perseverance in the back of her mind. She often heard the words of what sounded to be a man and even saw what appeared to be a vision of him in a cream sweater, standing next to her. Though transparent, he continued to be her solidity and solace in the midst of complete uncertainty. When they beat her or used some horrible technology designed for torture, she took notice of his words in her ears telling her not to give in but to fight.

In the dark, she heard his voice. “I love you, don’t you ever forget that.” Those were the last words she heard from him. The Tok’ra released her soon after, but she had no place to go. His encouragement echoed through her mind as she roamed the galaxy pirating and trying to survive. Never again would she give up, she would always continue to fight. The woman didn’t know who the man or being was, but she would never forget his voice or how he kept her going when she could have easily given up. She thought she wouldn’t hear that voice again, until she was stealing ship one day, dressed as a kull warrior when something familiar and comforting reached her ear.
