“I thought you’d be with your dear general right now,” Vala said quietly a Daniel stepped into the dark of her guarded suite. After their ordeal in the Ori galaxy, she wasn’t in the mood for company, but she couldn’t refuse talking to Daniel.

“Wait, how’d you know Jack was here?” Daniel questioned, confused. “Never mind. I was just coming to see if you were okay. You seemed upset when you left my office.”

“Of course I’m okay, Daniel. I always am,” Vala replied smiling a weak smile as she sat up and swung her legs over the edge. The truth was though, that she wasn’t fine; far from it. She felt the bed dip as Daniel sat next to her.

“We’ve been through a lot lately. I know it may not always seem like it, but I care. If you ever need to talk about anything, I’m here. Okay?” Daniel put his arm around Vala’s shoulder.

“Daniel, I’ve been in a lot of situations that were frightening,” Vala said after a long silence. “But I’ve never been as scared as I am of these beings, whatever they are,” she continued, her voice trembling as a tear fell slowly down her cheek.

“I know,” Vala heard Daniel whisper. She didn’t know if he actually believed what she was saying, or if he was just being considerate. It was a risk she was willing to take because for the first time in her life she had a shoulder to cry on. In the past, necessity told her to dry her tears and run away as fast as she could; that fear was a weakness. Now, when terror gripped her soul like never before, she had someone she could rely on. Vala realized that she could let herself be scared as long as Daniel was there to lead her through the dark of trepidation.
