“Sam! Something’s happening!” Vala called from the kitchen.

“What happened?” Sam asked as she entered the room, seeing the large pot on the stove foaming over. She quickly stepped in front of Vala to turn the heat of the burner down thus causing the foam to disappear back into the pot. Sam looked at Vala with a curious and questioning look.

“I didn’t do anything. I just turned the stovetop on like you told me too,” Vala replied with an innocent look. It was a good plan in theory, to cook a Christmas dinner for Jack and Daniel together. Jack had just gotten in from Washington to spend the holidays with the team, but Teal’c took the time off to visit his son and Cameron had gone home to Kansas for the season. Jack was really there to spend time with Sam though. After burning two pies and a batch of dinner rolls, Vala and Sam were starting to question their cooking abilities.

“You were supposed to turn it on low, not high. That makes the potatoes bubble over, as you just demonstrated,” she continued to look at Vala with a concerned look.

“I don’t think this is going to work,” they said in unison.

Daniel and Jack were oblivious to the girls’ failures as they were doing some last minute shopping. They passed a vintage shop and Jack stopped and nudged Daniel while pointing at a necklace on display. “Vala would like that right?” Jack asked.

“Yeah, the question is, how much is it?” Daniel answered leaning closer to the window for a closer inspection. Unfortunately the tag on the back was hidden behind the display holder. Daniel opened the door and went inside, followed by Jack.

Daniel asked the clerk if she could get him the necklace out of the window and Jack wandered aimlessly about the store. His eyes were drawn to a hair clip sitting on a small table full of similar pieces. He picked it up and smiled, remembering their trip to 1969. Then something in his mind clicked and he realized why it looked familiar. Daniel came up behind him holding the necklace. “You ready? I think I’m going to get this for Vala. What’d you find?” Daniel asked looking at the simple flower clip.

“Do you remember this?” Jack asked.

“Um…Yes. Isn’t it from 1969?”

“Yeah. You ready?” Jack asked, walking up to the register.

“Sure. I think we actually finished shopping early,” Daniel replied looking at his watch. Sam and Vala had said dinner would be at 6 and it was 4:30. He and Jack paid for their items and walked out into the brisk cold.

                                                       * * * *

Sam and Vala had finished putting the food in serving dishes and setting the table, smiling because their new plan had let them finish early. Sam’s house was decorated with garland and tiny white lights everywhere. It was the only time of the year that Sam actually spent most of her time at her house.

Vala was excited for dinner, even if it hadn’t turned out the way she had expected. It was with Daniel and that was all that mattered. “They’re here!” she called from the window. Before they could ring the doorbell, Vala opened the door with a wide smile. She kissed Daniel on the cheek as he walked in. Sam came from the kitchen and gave Jack a hug, comfortable that in her own house she was far from Air Force regulations. The two women led them into the dining room, where the table was filled with delicious looking food.

“Wow, I didn’t think these two could cook,” Jack whispered to Daniel.

“They can’t,” Daniel replied in the same hushed tone, confused by the wonderful smells that filled the air. “Okay, what’s going on? I thought you guys would have burned the house down by now,” Daniel told the two women who just grinned.

“Darling, I’m surprised you doubt my cooking skills. You should know that I used to earn my living as a cook at an inn once,” Vala told him.

“I wonder how many people died after eating there,” Daniel said under his breath.

“I heard that. We cook you a lovely meal and all we get is disbelief,” Vala looked over a Sam, who had the same innocent look Vala had.

“How ‘bout we just eat?” Jack suggested taking a seat at the table. Sam followed, sitting at his side.

“Fine, but I’ll figure it out eventually,” Daniel said as he put his hand at the small of Vala’s back, as they went to sit down together.

The food was restaurant quality and the company was better, but the best for Vala was sitting next to Daniel. He seemed more relaxed when off the base on world. This made Vala happy because it meant he put his arm around her when they sat on the couch. He didn’t push her head off his shoulder before they opened presents. He didn’t move away from her like he did when they were on the base. Vala smiled when she handed him a gift from underneath the tree.

Daniel opened the gift and smiled thinking how well Vala knew him now. It was a black hard leather case for his glasses. “That way I can’t break them,” Vala told him with a grin.

“Thank you,” Daniel replied as he kissed her cheek. They hadn’t been together as a couple for long, but it seemed as though they were an old married couple already. He guessed it was because of all they’d been through together. Daniel heard laughter and looked over at Sam and Jack.

“I can’t believe you remembered after all these years,” Sam was holding the small hair clip from the vintage store. Jack just smiled putting his arm around her shoulders.

“What?” Vala asked Daniel, knowing there must be a story to it.

“When we went back to 1969 Sam had admired that clip in a shop we walked past. Since we didn’t have much money, just the kindness of a couple we met, she couldn’t get it. Jack saw it in a vintage shop earlier today and recognized it,” Daniel told her, reaching for a small box on top of the tree skirt. “Speaking of that vintage store…”

Vala opened the package Daniel had handed her to reveal a scrollwork butterfly with a purple stone in the middle, hanging from a chain. “Oh, Daniel, it’s beautiful,” she told him. “Can you help me put it on?” she held the clasp up for him. Daniel fastened the necklace behind her neck and slipped his arms around her middle resting his head on the top of hers. She leaned back into him, feeling the heartbeat in his chest quicken. She smiled, but said only two words, “Restaurant delivery.”

“What?” Daniel asked, confused.

“That’s how we cooked dinner, we ordered from a restaurant.”

“Hmm, I knew you couldn’t cook,” Daniel replied playfully. Vala just smiled and smacked his knee a little harder than was necessary.

Daniel thought about how many times he had spent Christmas without a woman at his side. He was glad to have found someone who understood him and knew just how to push his buttons. That necklace was a small token of the thanks and love he felt for Vala every day. It was nice to just relax and not think about anything except the matter at hand instead of the fate of the galaxy, sometimes two. He smelled Vala’s hair and the smell of shampoo and perfume reminded him that he didn’t have to fight his enemies alone now. He had someone who would stand by him and be there for him no matter what the circumstances. For now however, Daniel was happy to just sit and fall asleep on the couch with Vala in his arms. They could stand against the enemies of Earth another day.
