As she headed out the door of the conference room she knew
that despite her attempts to illustrate to them otherwise, the team knew she
wasn‘t okay. In the span of the past week she had been “betrayed” by her team
and lost her daughter, she supposed that they had a right to be concerned.
Although she had had the device from the Galerans fix her memory, she still
carried with her the betrayal and pain from the false ones.
Leaving her teammates behind, she made her way to the showers, hoping that the
steady stream of water would wash away all of the feelings that she didn‘t want
to deal with. She quickly changed out of her fatigues, grabbed a towel, and
headed to one of the stalls. She turned the water on full blast at the highest
heat the dial would allow her. Stepping into the scorching hot water she ignored
her skins’ cries of protest, hoping that her mind and body would focus on the
pain she was voluntarily inflicting upon herself rather than the painful
memories that the last few days had given her.
But it seemed as if the more she tried to distract herself from the past week,
the more the memories demanded her attention. When she reached for the soap,
she remembered the dirt covering Major Reynolds. She remembered how the
sweat and mud had mixed with anger as he accused her of killing his team.
Her hands instinctively flew to her throat, trying desperately to dislodge the
lump that had formed in it. The gesture was so familiar. She remembered
the way her hands had clawed at her throat when her daughter had been invisibly
strangling her only yesterday. A wave of images flashed through her mind,
all of the versions of Adria she had seen over the years, all of the ages of
her daughter burned into her memory forever. Then the final image, her
daughter’s tear-filled eyes as she softly said “Goodbye, mother.”
Vala backed up against the wall as she heard her daughter’s voice echo in her
head. Then she heard the accusatory recriminations of Major Reynolds followed
by all of the screams, explosions, and whispered conversations she had heard
since then. The voices swirled around her, mixed with a myriad of images that
she simply couldn’t ignore.
Her eyes had long ago filled with tears, but now she was gasping for breath
between sobs. She couldn’t stop the flood of emotions now, they were too
strong. She curled up in the corner of the stall, holding her body, trying to
fight the cold enveloping her despite the heat of the water reigning down upon
her bare skin.
She banged her head against the tiles, hoping that if she couldn’t shut the
images and voices out maybe she could at least beat them out. But before she
could, a light enveloped the stall and a figure appeared before her. Looking
up, she could barely make out Daniel’s figure through the tears.
He said nothing as he got down on one knee in front of her. He slowly reached
out to touch her, gently removing the wet strands of hair clinging to her face.
Seeing him more clearly now, she recognized the raw fear and worry written all
over his handsome features. He reached for the dial to turn off the water then
grabbed her towel and gently wrapped it around her naked body. All she could do
was numbly allow him to cover her and pull her into his arms.
He said nothing, and for that she was grateful. Nothing he said would help, the
only thing he could do now was hold her and hope that his warmth would drive
away the coldness of her memories.
