“I know you…” Yes, he knew her. Hers was a face he was not
likely to forget. No man at any age could forget such a vibrant, striking
beauty.
“Well,” she replied brightly, her hand resting gently on his knee as she knelt
in front of him, “of course you do, silly! It’s me, Vala.”
Vala? What game was the fair lady playing with him now? Lady Elaine loved to
play games with him, had an intellect to match and even surpass Arthur’s. Who
was this Vala she was pretending to be?
“I had the strangest dream,” he murmured. “Everything was covered in ice.” Just
like that day, that horrible, unbearable day, when Mordred and Arthur had
sealed each other’s fate just as the cold winter sun had spilled over the
lands. She had come, courageously riding with the reinforcements brought by the
repentant Lancelot, not even bothering to remain at his side, but riding ahead
of him. Elaine had joined him then and together they had found Arthur mortally
wounded. The men had wept, their tears freezing to their cheeks, but she had
only stood there, cold and detached. Gone was the intelligent, vivacious woman
who had so delighted in his visits to Camelot.
But here she was again, restored to the young lady who had come to that bright
and shining city to serve the new queen, before the horror brought on by
Mordred, before the lies that had brought everything down on them, before
Lancelot finally revealed to her that her love for him was indeed unrequited.
This was Elaine restored to her happy youth.
“
And Percival! Was he still here as well? He had survived as well, taking charge
when his queen’s strongest lady had seemingly lost the ability to move and when
all the other knights succumbed to their grief. It was he who had held them all
together only through his sheer strength of will.
“Daniel.”
And just like that, it was all thrown back, put in its proper place. He
remembered. These were Vala and Mitchell, not Elaine and Percival. He was
Daniel, not Merlin. Those days are gone, and he was thrust back into his own
reality.
As he rubbed at his eyes, a part of him could not help but wish for the days
that Merlin remembers, to be free of this burden that weighed him down.
At least, until he found himself looking into Vala's concerned eyes, and then
he knew he couldn't leave. Because if he left, she’d follow and drag him back
by his ear, just as he dragged her back when her own memories were lost to her.
She wouldn’t let him go.
So he held onto her just as tightly.
