Daniel found himself wandering around the base in search of Vala, who had somehow gotten lost between getting him some coffee and coming back to his office. Why did she always get distracted? Honestly, if it was shiny, her eyes went straight to it. Most likely though, she had gotten to talking with someone. Having already been to the commissary and seen she wasn’t there, Daniel figured she was in the lab of their favorite scientist.

Passing Sergeant Siler in the hallway, Daniel heard that familiar voice. Not laughing or joking, it was just simply that smoky, accented vocal that he found himself loving so much. It was definitely hard to admit, but her speech was just as comforting as Sam’s. Though it was often the source of his annoyance, it was nice to hear. Stopping to listen at the doorway, Daniel was slightly surprised at what he heard.

“Why can’t I just find someone to be there for me?” the disembodied voice that was Vala’s floated through the door to Daniel’s ears.

“I don’t know, Vala. I really don’t know,” Sam’s voice replied to Vala, sounding a little distant as if she was concentrating on some gadget or computer simulation.

“There’s just never been anyone that I can trust to talk to or consider a relationship with,” Vala pointed out.

Daniel was put in an awkward situation very quickly. A feeling began to churn waves in his gut telling him to go set things straight with Vala. After all, what she really needed was the truth. However, if he did interrupt the conversation he would get a bunch of crap from both female parties about women’s privacy and how rude it is to eavesdrop. How could Daniel just sit back and let Vala go on thinking he wasn’t there for her though? Clearly he had to say something, so he sauntered into Sam’s lab and immediately took control of the situation. “Sam? Can I have a moment with Vala?”

“But I was in the middle of—“ Sam stopped her sentence upon getting a look from Daniel that said what he was going to talk about with Vala was pretty important. “I think I’m just gonna grab some jello.”

Vala looked up at Daniel, who seemed to be standing rather close. Being a bit confused, she opened her mouth to start the conversation but Daniel’s hand raised, stopping her. “No, Vala. I need to talk and you need to listen,” Daniel began, not leaving any pause for her to interject and comment before he continued. “You don’t ever need to think that no one is here for you. You’re safe here, you know that. Why did you say that stuff to Sam?”

“Because that’s how I feel, Daniel. I wouldn’t have said anything if that’s not what I believe,” Vala became defensive and looked away from Daniel. This wasn’t something she wanted to confront and the fax coming through the machine proved an easy escape. Walking over and picking it up quickly, she tried to hide behind getting a reprimand.

“Vala,” Daniel started, still a bit confused. “Vala, look at me. You need to know something. I know that we’re all here for you, but me especially. I hate to admit it, but you’ve grown on me. Whatever crazy circumstance we’re in, I know you’re there with me…even if it’s in some weird way that I don’t approve of at the time. The point is, you’re there for me whether you realize it or not. Why can’t you see that I’m trying to be that for you?”

“Daniel…I…How can I trust you when I barely know you?” Vala asked quietly, almost a confession more than a question. If he wanted honest and open confessions of feelings, she could give a little, but she wasn’t willing to give it all. He would have to answer some of her questions as well.

“What do you mean you barely know me? Vala, we’ve been working together for almost three years!” Daniel was full on puzzled by this woman’s thought process. How could she think after all that they’ve been through that she doesn’t know as much about him as anyone else?

“Yes, I know how you take your coffee, what your favorite brush on a dig is, that you think Teal’c can kick Cam’s ass, but you always hold back. The things I don’t know, Daniel, are the really important ones. I can’t see you unless you take away that mask you hide so well behind,” Vala opened up, told the man in front of her what he needed to do.

“Oh, I see. You think that because I don’t bare my soul to you on a daily basis that means that you can’t possibly know me? Is that it?” Daniel was getting a tad angry now.

“Well, I wasn’t meaning on a daily basis, but when have you ever bared your soul to me? You ask for trust but you can’t even trust me with knowing who you really are!” Vala was aggravated and could see the little veins bulging in Daniel’s forehead. Had she been calm herself, she would have thought it was cute.

“Okay, I get it now. You want to know who I really am? What’s inside of me that no one else knows?” Vala nodded. “I am completely in awe of who you are. You’re this amazing woman who’s inspired and annoyed me in so many ways. But that’s why you’re so wonderful, you teach me something new every day. I trust you with my life and now I’m trusting you with my secrets. There’s really only one though. You are my angel; the one who’s saved my life both physically and mentally. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I wanted to get out of this place and give up, but stayed because of you. You’ve kept me going through this whole Ori thing. Vala? Say something.”

“You talk really fast,” Vala tried to make a joke, but no one was laughing. The moment was too tense for comedy. “I know what you’re saying and I get it. I really do. I have one question though. Why are you telling me all this now? Why couldn’t you have told me earlier?”

“You didn’t ask and I wasn’t ready to tell you. I had to make sure this wasn’t just some passing thing. I needed to be sure of myself; that I wasn’t just trying to talk myself into it because you were so beautiful and intriguing. I see now though, that you truly are my saving grace; the one who I know is there for me in every way,” Daniel told her quietly as he put his hands on her shoulders, caressing the ends of her collarbones with his thumbs.

“So this is how I know I can trust you? Because I’m there for you?” Daniel was the one to nod this time. “For me to be sure, I need one more thing.”

“And what would that be?” Daniel’s anger had retreated to the deep of his mind and had been replaced with an understanding.

“I need you to take me out to dinner. Show me a good time on a proper date,” Vala’s smile was coming back now. Her insecurities had been filled in with hope and adrenaline. Both things never tended to last long, but it was fun to ride them when the chance arose. Though she didn’t completely trust him, there was a ‘yet’ in her mind. That ‘yet’ reassured her that one day, she would be comfortable enough to trust Daniel with everything.

“Sure,” Daniel replied with a chuckle. Now that she knew everything he thought about her, it was much easier to agree to a date. Something inside of him was still telling him that this was a bad idea, that he’d regret it in the end. Those feelings, however, were squished by the gushing of emotion saying this was the best thing to come along in a significant amount of time.

Heading out of Sam’s lab to go decide on where to go for dinner, Vala and Daniel passed Sam. Of course, she had a cup of blue jello in hand and a confused look on her face. It was almost as if she had expected slamming doors and thrown equipment but was surprised to find a happy couple holding hands.

Though Sam was important in both their lives, Daniel and Vala were concentrating on their relationship and would be for the rest of the night. At dinner in the dim French restaurant, questions would be asked and answers given openly. An older couple would see them sitting in the corner booth and think what a lovely young couple they were, remembering when they were that age and madly in love. The white haired woman would whisper to her husband of fifty years that she remembered when he was like that: all full of hope and smiles. The wrinkled gentleman would tell his love that he remembered the night she put her trust in him when he asked her to marry him. As they both walked out to go back to their home, they would stop to tell Daniel and Vala each something different. “Love her forever.” “Trust him with your heart.” Destiny had sent these words to the alien and the linguist, reaffirming their bond. If they were smart, they would acknowledge the gesture.
