AUTHOR’S NOTES:  Thanks to taraleesg1, my awesome beta on this one.  I know it’s a little late for a 300 inspired fic, but the saying just popped back into my mind the other night.

In the age of Sparta and Athens, it is said that mothers and wives sent their sons and husbands off to war with the saying “Come back with your shield or on it.” Meant to inspire honor and courage, they told them to either come back victorious or dead. Death or glory, right? Daniel had told Vala this story about a week before he was assigned to a mission off world that left Vala at home.

Upon entering the gate room, Daniel’s thoughts turned to Vala, the raven haired beauty that he loved. The future seemed uncertain, more so than usual. For some reason, he was actually a little frightened. Reason said, “The Earth will go on, as it always has. It’s a survivor, just like you.” However, Daniel’s love heavy heart said, “You must be careful to succeed. You’re not just living for you anymore.” Voices were filling his mind, each with their own opinion. They were silenced though when a beautiful alien walked into the concrete room.

“Come to see me off?” Daniel asked with a smirk, holding his arms out to catch Vala’s waist as she got nearer. There was something about her smell that calmed his nerves to where he only heard one voice.

“Yes, darling,” Vala stretched onto her tip toes and kissed the end of Daniel’s nose. “None of this death or glory stuff. You better come home with your shield and not on a stretcher.”

“I’ll do my best,” Daniel replied with a bit of a chuckle. He caught Vala’s lips in a tender kiss that exhibited the strange love that was their own. Cameron’s voice pulled Daniel out of the moment though.

Jackson! Stop acting like newlyweds and let’s move out,” the colonel called from the steel ramp leading up to the Stargate, which had been activated.

“But we are newlyweds,” Daniel remarked, still holding Vala firmly in his grasp.

“He’s right though, you do need to get going,” Vala told Daniel quietly, not really wanting him to let her go. Usually she wouldn’t mind because she would be going through the gate with him and the team. This was yet another one of those planets with odd cultural rules that the team were bound to follow to gain their trust. Apparently this one didn’t allow women to come through the gate. Captain Kelly Mayfield had barely gotten back alive. This circumstance left Vala and Sam at the base, waiting for the men-folk to get back. Very Little House on the Prairie if you ask Vala.

Daniel and Vala said their goodbyes and I-love-yous with sad eyes and worried hearts. Vala stood by the thick steel door until the gate shut off, signifying Daniel really had left. Looking down at her left hand she admired the princess cut diamond perched atop a yellow gold band. She had wanted a naquadah ring to signify how fate had thrown them together, but she had been overruled. In a way, the wedding bands they had exchanged were like a shield. Their love could fight off anything the universe could throw at them. They’d also both die with it, attached to each other until the end of their days. Maybe Daniel would find the same security in his ring off world as Vala did back on Earth.
