“Daniel?” Vala asked as she stood in his living room running her hands along the mantel, and the picture frames that adorned it.
“Yes?” Daniel asked poking his head into the room from the kitchen where he was getting things ready to go meet the rest of the Team for team night. It was potluck and he was bringing macaroni and cheese and had to come home to change and grab the macaroni that he had one of his neighbors make for him.
“Who’s this?” she asked picking up a frame, which held a very old picture of a man, a woman and a small boy. Daniel smiled and walked over to Vala and taking the frame out of her hands.
“Those are my parents, and me
before they died. We were on a dig in a small town near
“Yup,” Vala nodded. The two turned heal and started for the kitchen, as there was a bright flash of lightening and the roar of thunder as the apartment went suddenly dark. With the flash of light, Vala screamed in fright as she jumped slightly.
“Woah,” Daniel said grabbed Vala and holding her hand. “Stay here, the power’s gone out, I’m going to see if I can get it back on,” he said digging into his pocket and producing his cellphone. “I’ll be right back okay?” Vala nodded as Daniel left her and flicked on his phone. The flash of his camera on it would do for light until he found a flashlight. Making his way into the kitchen, Daniel fished around one of the drawers before pulling out a flashlight.
Vala in the midst of the darkness walked over to the window and pulled back the curtains. The bit of light of the sky made the room a brighter, but not much. It was raining buckets outside, the rain was beating against the window, the flash of lightening sparked through the sky and the building rumbled with thunder. The usual love for the rain, Vala was a bit frightened, she waited until she felt Daniel touch her shoulder as she jumped slightly.
“Looks like we’re out for a while, I called Sam, she’s out too, so we’re just going to stay here until power comes back and the rain stops,” he said rubbing his thumb across her elbow. “Are you okay?” His voice was soft and soothing.
“Fine darling,” Vala said equally softly, turning around. “Do you have any candles?”
“Oh yeah, come on, we’ll get the place lit up,” Daniel said taking her hand and walking towards the kitchen. “I ah, keep some candles in here somewhere.” Daniel set the flashlight down on the counter so that it gave off enough light for both of them to look.
“Do you have a match?” Vala asked pulling out candles from the utensil drawer.
“Yeah, I have BBQ lighter here somewhere,” he said absent mindedly opening his cupboard and pulling it out. “This should work.”
Walking over, Vala held out a candle as Daniel lit it and a soft glow washed over their faces. Daniel smiled and brought a hand to her cheek and stroked it softly with his thumb. Leaning in softly Daniel softly brushed Vala’s lips with his own. Pulling back after what seemed like a lifetime he smiled at her.
“Daniel?” Vala asked softly as her eyes blinked open.
“Hmm?”
“We better get the rest of the candles lit,” Vala smiled pulling away slightly.
“Okay,” Daniel said grabbing the other candles as Vala went in search for candlesticks. Five minutes later, Vala had the living room lit with a soft glow of candles. She sat on the floor beside the coffee table as her finger gently played with the flame. The sound of the rain beating down on the window and around her, Vala felt somewhat at peace.
She loved the flame, it was sensual and attractive. It provided heat and light and invited all that was near to enjoy what it had to offer.
Daniel’s presence just made it better, as his arms wrapped around her he pulled her softly into his body. “You sure you’re okay Vala?”
“Yes darling,” Vala said softly. “The rain is so violent…” she started as her hand cupped Daniel’s and she rubbed the top of it with her thumb. “Daniel, have you ever wondered where the flame goes?”
Chuckling softly Daniel rested his chin on her shoulder. “Can’t say that I have. What brought this on?”
“Oh nothing really,” Vala said in a tone barely above a whisper. “My grand mother used to say, that for every flame there was a life waiting to be brought into this world, and when it went out, that flame would turn into a new child.” Running her finger through the flame she smiled at the warmth. Turning around slightly Vala looked at Daniel with hopeful eyes. “So what do you do when you have no light?”
“Well,” Daniel said. “I usually read, or catch up on my sleep.”
“Darling, that doesn’t sound too fun,” Vala said shifting her body so that she was looking at him, her back to the table. “Play a game with me?”
“I don’t know what I have,” Daniel said warily, knowing that he wasn’t getting out of playing a game with Vala.
“I’ll go look, you go get us something to drink and eat,” she said standing up and taking the flashlight. Daniel watched as Vala left the light and wander into the hallway. Shaking his head, Daniel stood up himself and made his way into the kitchen. The light was near none, and he moved slowly around the kitchen he knew well. Two wine glasses, a bottle of white wine from the refrigerator, and the only thing he had in a bag; chocolate chips.
Making his way back into the soft glow that radiated from the two candles in the living room, Daniel placed the wine and glasses down filling each up as Vala came back into the light.
“I found this Scrabble game,” she said putting it down on the table. Daniel smiled and handed her the wine glass.
“Lets play,” he smiled clinking his glass rim to hers.

“R-E-A-D-E-R,” Daniel said placing the letters on the board. “Reader. That’s seven points. Plus it’s on a double word score and D is on a triple letter score, so its twenty-two points.”
“Daniel that’s a small word,” Vala teased as Daniel laughed.
“You’re just jealous because your last word was ‘at’,” he teased taking a sip of his wine. Vala stuck out her tongue and stared at her letters.
“Muzjiks,” Vala grinned placing her letters on the scrabble board.
“How do you know that?” Daniel asked staring at the word.
“I read it in one of your books,” she grinned cheekily as Daniel started to add up the points. “How many?”
“Seventy-nine,” he said as the board was turned towards him. Looking up at Vala who seemed to be concentrating on picking her new letters. Smiling inwardly, Daniel carefully placed six letters down on the board and turned the board around picking up his wine glass.
Vala grinned and looked down at the board as she read what Daniel had put down. Her eyes widened as she read the six letters he placed. For Daniel had written the words ‘Marry Me’ with his letters. Looking at Daniel she pretended not to notice as she placed two letters off one of the letters and turned it towards Daniel. ‘Yes.’
Daniel smiled and placed his wine glass down before he moved on his knees to where Vala was sitting, leaning against one of his arm chairs. Moving his hand to her cheek, he gently stroked her lips before he leaned down and kissed her.
